In the scientific study Hello20, we intend to monitor the development of a large group of deaf and hard-of-hearing children over the course of 20 years.
We aim to find out how deaf and hard-of-hearing children in the Netherlands are faring. How does their development of language and behaviour progress? What impact do education and environment have? How do deaf and hard-of-hearing children fare at school, and what are their lives like as young adults? In this study, we gain a better understanding of why some deaf or hard-of-hearing children develop differently than others.
What does participating in Hello20 involve?
If you decide to participate in Hello20, we would like to collect information until your child turns 20. Given the lengthy duration of the study, we will first ask for your consent to participate until your child turns 2 or 4 (depending on your child’s current age). We will continue to ask for your consent for each subsequent phase of the study.
We will gather information in several ways. Until your child reaches the age of 2, we will ask you to complete online questionnaires every 3 to 6 months. Between the ages of 2 and 4, we will ask you to complete online questionnaires every 6 to 12 months. The questionnaires will cover topics such as your child’s language development, your interactions with your child, and your child’s overall development. Additionally, we will conduct home visits to record play activities you share with your child.
What can you expect from us?
We will treat your data with confidentiality. Please read the data protection appendix for more details on how we store your information.
We will keep you updated on the study’s progress through newsletters and this website. As a token of our appreciation for your participation, we will occasionally give your child a small gift. Additionally, we will invite you to events where you can meet other participating families.
Are you excited about our study? And are you the parent of a deaf or hard-of-hearing child born after October 2022? Sign up!
